Why Should Jewish Students Need to Lean about Free Speech?

One of the best things about Jewish tradition is that it promotes debates and disagreement. It allows everyone to express their thoughts and views even if they are not acceptable to someone else. However, unfortunately, it feels that the seminal import of civic discourse is being long on several young Jews who are currently enrolled in colleges and universities around the nation. According to a survey, Jewish students at many universities are actually leading the charge to shut down the ideas of others.

The data shows an incline in the number of students who try to disrupt and shut down speakers when they visit the campus. One-third of the students can think of situations where such behavior can be acceptable sometimes and the rest can face cases when shouting down others isn’t acceptable. However, they still find it acceptable to try to silence speeches.

More than 40% of Jewish students feel that there are always or most of the time cases when shouting down someone is acceptable. And 75% of students find shouting down others is acceptable to a degree more than Catholic and Protesting students.

When it comes to blocking others from attending a campus speech and listening to controversial ideas, 13% of students think that it can sometimes or always be acceptable. Talking about Jewish students, a large number hold similar views. Many people think that it is rare however such behavior is acceptable, as compared with even more Jewish students.

In a nutshell, several Jewish students think that they have a right to be on the front line of cancel culture in the spirit of justice. However, they are misguided and ignore a really important Jewish ideology. Not only Jewish students but other students as well should recognize that true equality and inclusion include viewpoint diversity, respect for real and meaningful political differences, and embracing a multitude of ideas, even if they are not acceptable to someone.

Social justice values are of utmost importance in Jewish thought. However, they do not override the virtues of argument and respecting ideological diversity. Jewish community as well as the higher education system has been embracing the idea that contradiction of ideas is the foundation of a free and prosperous society. The Jewish community can never ignore its one of the most beautiful features. So our students must demand more speech and ideas, rather than enforcing silence and cancelation.

Jewish giving speakers can help young students to know more about the core of our culture that we have been embracing for years. It can create an impact on students’ values, literacy, practice, and belief. This is it for this blog! If you have any further doubts, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the experts to learn more.
